Run, don’t walk to the new French bistro, Le Comptoir, on 4th Street in San Rafael. You will instantly fall in love with the red metal chairs, the warm and friendly (no, really) French staff, and the welcoming communal farm tables. As if this weren’t enough, the smells of the rotisserie chicken and the baskets of frites with aioli will do you in. The roasted beet salad with hazelnuts and the pan-seared sea bass with sunchoke chips were favorites at our table.

Seriously unpretentious, but delicious and comforting food with a great wine list, make this a new favorite for us. Le Comptoir (we remember from high school French that the “p” is silent, did you?) is a keeper and a welcome addition for another great dining spot in San Rafael. Have an early dinner (reservations highly recommended!) and catch a flick at nearby The Rafael Theater. Bon Appetit!
