We’re just a little bit excited that on August 21st we will see the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 38 years. And since the next one won’t be until the year 2024, we are on the hunt for prime viewing position!

A few fun eclipse facts:

  • The full eclipse will last a maximum of 2 minutes and 40.2 seconds
  • Here in California we will see a partial (about 75%) eclipse which will start at 9:01 am and end at 11:37 am with the most coverage at 10:15 am
  • This eclipse will be visible along a 70-mile wide patch arching from Oregon to South Carolina
  • Friendly reminder (we are moms!): you need special viewing glasses in order to safely look at an eclipse

The best viewing spots in the Bay Area:

* Twin Peaks: it is, after all, one of the highest points in San Francisco.

* Coit Tower: the observation deck offers 360 degree views, purchase tickets in the gift shop.

 * Crissy Field: pure unobstructed views in the marina and a great spot to throw down a blanket and enjoy your coffee.

* Hamon Observation Tower at the de Young Museum: breathtaking panoramic views behind a protective glass wall.

* The Exploratorium: naturally, they will be filming and live streaming with NASA. Attend their viewing party or watch here!

* Ring Mountain in Tiburon: meet at the end of Taylor Road at 9:30 am for a free guided tour with park rangers.

* Point Reyes National Seashore: call  415.464.5137 to check the fog forecast before heading out. And leave time to stop at Bovine Bakery for a few (necessary) treats.

* Marin Headlands: make the short but steep hike to Slacker Ridge or Hawk Hill. Bonus: hands down the best view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

* Muir Beach: terrific viewing on the Dias Ridge. Lunch at Pelican Inn after sounds good to us!
