It’s getting close to the end of the school year here in Marin. We can’t wait for warm summer nights and good solid family time without the usual grind of a schedule. One of our favorite local events is theĀ Presidio Twilight in San Francisco.

This giant picnic and campfire runs every Thursday throughout the summer from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. The fun happens on the main parade grounds right outside the visitor’s center in the Presidio. All you need to bring is a picnic blanket as a large array of food trucks from Off the Grid will be on hand. Trucks rotate regularly but some of our favorites include An The Go for Vietnamese garlic noodles and Drums & Crumbs for sensational southern fried chicken. For dessert, try Humphry Slocombe for absolutely worth-the-splurge ice cream. With flavors like “Elvis: the fat years” and “roasted white chocolate lavender” need we say more?

There is live music, lantern-lit cabanas (available on a first-come, first-served basis) and sunset activities such as bean bag toss, hula hoops and even a giant Jenga. This is a very family-friendly affair and a great way to break up the weekday routine. Ok, we are also always looking for an excuse to get out of cooking dinner!

Insider’s tips: dogs on leashes are welcome and bring layers as it can get chilly once the sun sets. You can get more information on Presidio Twilight here.
